Use appropriate hair shampoo and conditioner. Look for labels on bottles that reflect the type of hair you have. Only shampoo and condition hair as often as necessary---normal to dry hair may only need to be shampooed once every few days.

Step 2

Decrease the use of hot styling aids. Curling irons, hair straightners and even blow driers can add excessive heat to hair, causing drying and increased damage to the ends. Allow hair to air-dry when possible. Use styling products that offer thermal protection to avoid damage caused by increased heat.

Step 3

Carefully comb hair when wet. Always use a wide-tooth comb. Do not pull or harshly comb hair, because this will cause the wet hair to pull and break.

Step 4

Visit the salon or barber shop for regular trims. Cutting off the dead ends from hair will keep hair healthy and avoid ends from splitting.

Step 5

Apply a deep-conditioning treatment to the hair weekly. Use over-the-counter hot oil treatments or olive oil from the kitchen. Both oils will leave hair soft and easy to comb. Hair will become stronger, and the chance of breakage will decrease.
